Ashok Dilawri said it best when he said the goal of Crown Credit Solutions is to “get customers in a car that meets their needs, help them re-establish their credit and get them back on their feet.”

“Bad things happen to good people,” says Shaun Proutt, general manager of Crown Credit Solutions. “There is divorce, a death in the family, a lost job: If something happens that impedes one’s ability to pay, we understand. We’re not talking about people who just refuse to pay. We’re talking about people who get into difficult situations, get behind in their payments and lose their good credit.”

“No matter what happened in your past we’re here to help. We work with a variety of people who have good, bad or no previous repayment history and also people who have zero or no money down. In really bad situations such as multiple bankruptcies, multiple repossessions out of bankruptcy at different times, currently delinquent on all existing obligations, repossessions less than one year old or a history of writing bad checks over a long period of time we can even help with that as well.”

Proutt started his career at age 13 pushing a broom at an auto dealership. He moved into the banking industry but worked almost exclusively in the auto division at Wells Fargo. Eventually he decided it was time to get back to working with people and discovered his passion for helping people with their credit problems and their vehicle needs.
“The entire concept of credit has never changed,” said Proutt. “It’s about the four Cs: Capacity to pay, credit history, collateral and character, and but character I mean things like stability, long-term residence, employment history etc.

“What I do at Crown Credit Solutions is help people get into a vehicle that meets their needs – it might not be the car you want but it will be the car you need – ad help them get back on their financial feet. And if they get better, it’s good business for us. Where will they get their maintenance done? Who will they speak highly of and recommend to friends? Ashok Dilawri wants to help people and it’s my job to make sure we do that whenever we can.”

We have to admit, we’ve heard it all. Should I buy a new car or a pre-owned vehicle? Should I buy from a dealer or scoop something off Kijiji? What are the pros and cons?

We turned to general manager of Crown Credit Solutions, Shaun Proutt for the answers. Shaun is the guy who can get anyone into a vehicle, even people with less-than-acceptable credit. He’s also the guy who has thought long and hard about the options offered when it comes to buying new or used.

“My personal preference? I’m a new car guy,” Shaun said. “I like the five-year, 100,000 kilometre warranty. I’m a guy who likes peace of mind. Like most people, I’m extremely busy and I don’t want to have to worry about my car. If there is a problem, I can drop it off at the dealership and in a couple of hours, I have it back. And because the Dilawri Group has a partnership with Enterprise Rent-a-Car, if my car is going to be in the shop for an extended period, I can rent a car and have it put on the service bill.”

Even though Shaun is a new car guy, he also believes that buying a pre-owned vehicle from any CROWN dealership is still a great decision.

“I know a new car depreciates quickly, so I always have the option at Dilawri to buy a pre-owned vehicle and if the pre-owned car is just a year old, I still have four years on the warranty.”

“Buying a used car from a private sale can be dangerous. Sure, the car has to be safety checked, but in most cases, you’re still not getting a warranty. At Dilawri, if you purchase a pre-owned vehicle, you not only get the Manitoba-government safety check, we do our own on top of that. At Dilawri, you know the car’s history. There is no danger at all, buying a pre-owned vehicle from one of the Dilawri dealerships.”

In other words, new or pre-owned, buying a vehicle at any CROWN Auto Group dealerships will not only provide you with exactly what you’re looking for, it will also give you peace of mind.

When your tires are properly inflated you can improve your gas mileage by 3.3 percent. Not only does your gas mileage improve but properly inflated tires are also safer and will last longer. Under-inflated tires can cause poor gas mileage, won’t last as long, and affect the vehicle’s handling and can cause vehicle overloading. The manufacturer’s recommendations for tire pressure are often found on a sticker on the driver’s side door, in the glove box, on the actual tires themselves or in the owner’s manual.

The following are three benefits of proper tire inflation. Note: many newer vehicles now come equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, or TPMS. For those not fortunate enough to own one of these new vehicles, here are a few reasons why you should have a tire pressure gauge and check your tire pressure regularly.

  • Fuel Economy. This is one of the most important things to prospective buyers in today’s market and having properly inflated tires means better mileage. This means going further with fewer trips to the gas station, whether it’s city or highway driving.
  • Less Wear. It’s a known fact that properly inflated tires will not wear out as fast as under-inflated ones. Also, “bad wear patterns” (where the tread in certain spots wears down quicker than others) will not be as much of an issue.
  • Keeping you Safe. Proper inflation equals better vehicle handling. If tire pressure is low, handling can be affected due to loss of traction and the possibility of an accident will increase. If you have the right amount of tire pressure, your vehicle will handle like it’s supposed to and your chances of having an accident will significantly decrease.

Avoiding Accidents

Good tire pressure also provides better handling in a vehicle. When tire pressure is low, on the other hand, the risk of some kinds of accidents can increase. When the vehicle is not as able to maintain traction on the road, driving gets generally more dangerous. This is another prime reason why drivers who know about the best car maintenance procedures always make sure that their tires are holding the correct amount of air pressure.

The idea of adding air to a tire is pretty simple. The problem is that all over America’s many communities, there are plenty of gas station air pumps that are simply worn out and have bad connections, incorrect gauges and other significant problems. The high number of accessible gas station air pumps is meant to help drivers with this essential maintenance, but too many of these machines actually confuse the driver more when it becomes hard to accurately measure air pressure. Keeping your own well functioning tire pressure gauge and using it instead of the readers on the gas station air compressor nozzles can help ensure proper inflation.

Those who don’t understand the practice of tire inflation should take a look at the owner’s manual for their vehicle and think about adopting this regular maintenance for keeping their car in better condition, saving money and improving safety.

When driving, oftentimes the unexpected can happen and it’s no fun to be stranded on the side of the road without emergency supplies. What follows is a list of tools and other items that can help in many situations and won’t take long to assemble.

1. Jumper cables/Fully charged jump box. These are a must have and if you can, buy the really good ones. They don’t cost much more than the cheap ones and will work better and last longer.

2. Four 15 minute roadside flares.

3. Oil, antifreeze and whatever brand of transmission fluid your vehicle uses.

4. First aid kit. Among other things your kit should include Band-Aids, bandage tape, antibiotic cream, scissors, aspirin, gauze and cold/heat packs.

5. Flashlight. A solar-powered one is an excellent idea.

6. Radio. If you’re able, purchase a hand-crank one with a USB port for a cell phone charger.

7. Water and Snacks. Beef jerky, nuts and tuna are all good high-protein choices.

8. Cash. You never know, right? Around $50 should suffice.

9. Multi-Purpose tool. A good one should have things like a knife, file, cutters, a screwdriver and more.

10. Tire Repair Kit. This includes the spare tire, a jack and a lug wrench.

11. Gloves. Invest in a really good pair of gloves – you won’t regret it. Hand cleaner is also a good idea and an inexpensive socket/screwdriver is as well.

At first glance this list may seem like overkill or a little silly even but all of these things will help in a variety of different situations. Gathering all of these items won’t break the bank (you probably already have many of them lying around) and they should all fit it an old toolbox or gym bag.

Once you’ve assembled your kit, you can simply toss it in the trunk and it will always be there when you need it. Let’s hope you never do, but it’s always better to be prepared even if the unexpected never does happen.

There are plenty of reasons to go with a used car instead of buying new! Lower insurance rates, a good chunk off the purchase price, and plenty of wiggle room on the price.

While you may have your heart set on purchasing a brand new vehicle, there are plenty of reasons why a used car may be a better fit for you. What follows are a number of used car buying tips to help you through the process should you choose to go this route.

Why?

Lower insurance rates, lower purchase price and lots of room to negotiate are just a few of the many positives to buying a used car. You can also track the vehicle’s history through the VIN number and decide whether you want the existing new-car warranty or opt for a used-car warranty.

What Fits Your Needs Best?

Do you need a minivan? Compact? SUV perhaps? How old do you want your vehicle to be? What kinds of features are important to you? Have you researched the models comparing things like reliability, handling and fuel efficiency? There are a lot of choices to make when buying a used car and it may seem daunting but you don’t have to go it alone. Talk to a friend or family member who drives the same kind of vehicle you’re looking at and ask them for advice. Also, keep your eyes open for similar makes and models to the one you may be looking at. For example, if you desire a Toyota Camry, check out the Honda Accord or the Nissan Sentra as well.

What’s Your Budget?

How much can you afford for a down payment? What can you get for your trade-in? These are two very important questions when considering your budget and oftentimes it is better to sell of your old car in advance and use that cash for a down payment on your used car purchase. It is strongly recommended that your car payment be no more than 20% of your monthly income. Also consider insurance and that, chances are, you will have to carry full coverage until your new purchase is paid in full. Getting financing through a dealer can often get a better rate than going through a bank yourself as multiple banks will compete for the dealership’s business.

Do Some Shopping.

Make trips to used car lots and the used-car sections of dealerships. Check the internet frequently and the newspapers. When you’re ready, narrow your search for a winner down to a few.

Don’t Forget the Test-drive.

The test-drive is extremely important and will most likely be the deal breaker for you. There’s a few things you should try when test-driving: listen closely to the engine when you start up the car, don’t be afraid to take it a little hard over bumps and around corners to see how the handling responds, take a close look at the tires, wheel wells (for rust) and the underbelly, take stock of the inside of the car and how worn things like the floor mats, pedals and seats are and above all, trust your instincts. If you’re buying from an individual it’s a good idea to ask to see the service records and if you feel like you’ve found the right fit, think about bringing it to a mechanic for a thorough check-up. For around $100 you can potentially save yourself a lot of hassle.

One of the most important things to prospective car buyers in the current market is fuel efficiency. With gas prices rising, buyers want a vehicle that doesn’t break the bank when it comes to fuel consumption. Here are a few tips from Automax you can do to enhance your fuel efficiency.

1. Easy With that Right Foot. Every time you accelerate you open the throttle which means more gas is getting dumped into the engine. This is especially prevalent for cars with turbochargers and big engines.

2. If you can, live without the AC. While this is not as much of an issue as it used to be with more efficient AC systems and drivetrains being made, having your vehicle’s air conditioning on will definitely have an effect on gas mileage.

3. Regular Maintenance is key. Simple things like having a clean air filter and proper air pressure in your tires can have a big effect on fuel economy. A dirty air filter equals poor flow and performance through the engine and when you don’t have enough air in your tires it means more rolling resistance.

4. Coasting. Your vehicle goes through a lot of effort starting from a dead stop so if you can, try and time yourself at lights. If you know a light is about to change, take your foot off the gas and slow down, instead of coming to a dead stop and having to start again. It’s also a good idea to coast down hills when you can.

5. Try for a consistent speed. On the highway, if you’re going a consistent, steady speed, you can save as much as 2 to 3 mpg. Cruise control is great and will keep your speed consistent.

If you’re putting all of these suggestions into practice, chances are you’re saving on gas and money and that’s always a good thing.

With the arrival of Spring comes the arrival of potholes. Here’s a quick guide on how to deal with them.

How to avoid potholes and minimize vehicle damage:

  • Make sure your tires have enough tread and are properly inflated.
  • Watch the car in front of you; if they are swerving in their lane, they’re most likely trying to avoid a pothole.
  • Avoid puddles as they may be hiding deep potholes.
  • If you do notice potholes in the road ahead, reduce speed and try to avoid them.
  • Don’t swerve out of your lane as you may find yourself hitting another vehicle instead of the pothole.
  • If you can’t avoid the pothole slow down as much as possible, but don’t break when driving over it as this may cause more damage. You should instead:
    1. Take your foot off the brake
    2. Roll over the hole at a low speed
    3. Hold the steering wheel firmly to avoid losing control

What to do if you hit a pothole:

  • If you do hit a pothole pull over and inspect your vehicle, especially the tires and rims, for damage.
  • If you see a bulge or visible cord material on the tires sidewall it should be replaced as soon as possible.
  • If you notice your vehicle pulling to the side, your alignment may have been affected. Take your vehicle in to have the wheel alignment checked by a qualified technician.

If you notice a particularly bad pothole, visit Winnipeg 311 Online or call 311 to report it.
